Money and Payments in Kerala

Currency, cards, UPI, ATMs and what things cost. A practical guide for international visitors.

Kerala uses the Indian Rupee (INR) as its currency. Managing money in Kerala is straightforward for international visitors once you understand how payments work on the ground. The landscape has changed significantly in recent years and cash is no longer the dominant mode of transaction it once was.

The Indian Rupee

The Rupee comes in notes of INR 500, 200, 100, 50, 20 and 10, along with coins for smaller denominations. In practice, INR 500 and INR 100 notes are the ones you will use most often.

One important practical point: UPI mobile payments have become so dominant in Kerala that cash handling has reduced significantly even at small shops and street stalls. If you hand over a INR 500 note to pay for a bottle of water or a small purchase, there is a genuine chance the shopkeeper will not have change. The solution is either to carry smaller denominations or to use UPI for everyday purchases, which is increasingly what local people do.

Kerala is relatively more expensive compared to other Indian states. Quality goods and services are widely available and the higher price generally reflects that quality. Do not expect the rock-bottom prices associated with some other parts of India.

UPI payments for international visitors

UPI (Unified Payments Interface) is the dominant payment method in Kerala today. It works by scanning a QR code and paying instantly in Indian Rupees from a linked account or wallet. It is accepted at hotels, restaurants, markets, autorickshaw stands, small shops and street vendors across the state.

Foreign visitors can now access UPI through a system called UPI One World. The process works as follows. On arrival in India, get a local SIM card at the airport. Download the PhonePe app. Load Indian Rupees into the app from your international debit or credit card. You can then use UPI to pay anywhere in Kerala exactly as a local person would. The conversion happens within the app at transparent rates.

This is our recommended payment approach for guests who want the most convenient and widely accepted payment method throughout their Kerala stay.

Currency exchange

Airport foreign exchange counters are convenient but expensive. The combination of exchange rate markups, service charges and taxes can amount to close to 10% above the interbank rate. Use the airport only for a small amount of cash to cover your first day if needed.

For better rates, use authorised currency exchange bureaus available across Kerala in all major towns and tourist areas. Western Union and other authorised money changers offer significantly better rates than airports. Banks also offer exchange services though the process can be slower.

Green Earth Trails can arrange currency exchange in advance if you let us know before your arrival. We will liaise with a registered, authorised exchange and have the required amount of Indian Rupees ready for you on arrival. This is a service we offer to guests who prefer to have cash arranged before they start moving around the state.

ATMs

ATMs are widely available in Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode and all major Kerala towns. In more remote areas including highland destinations and backwater villages, ATMs are less frequent, so it is sensible to carry sufficient cash before heading into rural areas.

International Visa and Mastercard debit and credit cards work at most ATMs. A transaction fee typically applies from your home bank. Withdraw a useful amount at each visit rather than making multiple small withdrawals.

One important warning at ATMs and payment terminals: many machines in India offer Dynamic Currency Conversion, where the terminal asks if you want to pay in your home currency rather than Indian Rupees. Always choose to pay in Indian Rupees. The Dynamic Currency Conversion rate is significantly worse than your own bank’s exchange rate and the difference goes to the terminal operator. This is a common and costly trap for international visitors.

Cards

Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted at hotels, higher-end restaurants, larger shops and most tourist-facing businesses across Kerala.

American Express, JCB and Diners Club are not widely accepted in Kerala. If these are your primary cards, ensure you have a Visa or Mastercard as a backup. Relying solely on Amex for a Kerala trip is not advisable.

For very small purchases, street food, autorickshaws and local markets, cards are often not accepted at all. This is where UPI or small denomination cash is needed.

Pricing and bargaining

Kerala is not a bargaining culture in the way that some other parts of India are. Prices in most shops, restaurants and establishments are genuine prices. Unlike in some North Indian tourist destinations, prices are not inflated in anticipation of a negotiation. If you bargain aggressively, you may find it is received awkwardly.

That said, in tourist areas, autorickshaws and some souvenir vendors do price for tourists. If a price feels high, it is perfectly reasonable to ask politely whether a better price is available. This is not aggressive bargaining, it is a sensible question. Government stipulated rates exist for many transport and tourist services and it is worth knowing that these exist even if they are not always the first price quoted.

The best approach in Kerala is to respond to what feels like a genuine price with acceptance, and to walk away politely from what feels inflated without confrontation.
