Tourist taxis, app cabs, autorickshaws, ferries and public transport. A practical guide to moving around Kerala.
Kerala is a well-connected state with a good road network, a functioning railway system, scenic ferry routes and a range of vehicle options from air-conditioned tourist taxis to autorickshaws. Understanding how the transport ecosystem works before you arrive will save you time, money and frustration on the ground.
For multi-destination travel across Kerala, a tourist taxi with a dedicated driver is by far the most flexible and convenient way to get around. You move at your own pace, stop where you want, and your driver handles navigation, luggage and local knowledge throughout the journey.
Tourist taxis in Kerala range from standard sedans to larger MUVs, 7-seater vans, 12-seater vans and coaches for larger groups. The right vehicle depends on your group size and luggage.
Multi-day tourist taxis operate on a slab rate system. A minimum daily distance of 100 kilometres is typical and the rate covers the vehicle, driver, fuel and tolls. Rates vary by destination. Kochi generally offers the most competitive rates in Kerala. For shorter within-city travel, taxis operate on a per-kilometre or metered basis.
What to watch out for when booking a tourist taxi independently:
Comparing rates alone is a poor way to choose a cab. The cheapest option frequently means a vehicle that is more than ten years old, poorly maintained, and driven by someone with limited experience of international guests. Before booking, ask to see photographs of the actual vehicle, confirm the age and condition of the cab, and understand who you are dealing with. Tour operators who own their own vehicles can offer competitive rates for genuinely good quality cabs. Aggregators and brokers who subcontract to whoever is cheapest cannot guarantee what turns up.
Green Earth Trails operates its own fleet of well-maintained vehicles for guest programs. When these vehicles are not committed to a guest program, we make them available for cab-only bookings. If you need a reliable vehicle for a Kerala itinerary, speak to us before booking elsewhere.
Uber operates in Kochi, Thiruvananthapuram, Kozhikode and other major Kerala cities. It is a genuinely useful and cost-effective option for within-city travel and short transfers. The app works exactly as it does anywhere in the world. Prices are generally very reasonable by international standards.
For longer inter-city journeys, app-based cabs become less reliable outside major urban areas. Driver availability drops significantly once you leave city limits and surge pricing during peak times can make them less attractive.
Rapido is a popular app-based autorickshaw service operating in Kerala’s cities. It is the cleanest way to book an autorickshaw at a fixed, transparent price, which avoids the negotiation that street-hailed autorickshaws typically require.
Autorickshaws (tuk tuks) are everywhere in Kerala and are the most practical option for short local journeys within towns and tourist areas. They are nimble, inexpensive and good fun.
Street-hailed autorickshaws in tourist areas will typically quote a tourist rate that is higher than what locals pay. This is standard practice across India. The Rapido and Uber apps offer the same autorickshaws at app-based rates without negotiation, which is the easier option if you have a working data connection.
If you are negotiating directly, agree the fare before getting in. A rough guide is to expect to pay somewhat more than the metered rate in tourist areas and to treat the difference as part of the local economy rather than something to argue about at length.
Kerala State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) operates buses across the entire state, reaching virtually every town and village. For budget travellers it is an excellent and very affordable network. Long-distance air-conditioned KSRTC buses are available between major cities and are a comfortable option. These can be booked online at onlineksrtcswift.com, which makes advance planning much easier.
Kerala’s railway network connects all the major coastal cities from Kasaragod in the north to Thiruvananthapuram in the south, with good frequency and reasonable fares. The coastal rail route through Kerala is scenic and practical for moving between Kochi, Thrissur, Kozhikode and Thiruvananthapuram. Train bookings for international visitors are easiest through the IRCTC website or app, though the registration process requires patience the first time.
For international guests on structured itineraries, public transport is generally not the most practical option as it requires significant flexibility on timing and is not suited to multi-destination programs with luggage. However for independent travellers with time, the KSRTC network and Kerala Railways offer a genuinely local experience at very low cost.
Kerala has an inland navigation network operated by the Kerala Inland Navigation Corporation (KINCO) connecting several backwater destinations by boat. These services are primarily used by local residents but offer an atmospheric and inexpensive way to travel certain routes.
The Alleppey to Kottayam ferry is one of the most popular routes, cutting through the backwaters and paddy fields of Kuttanad. The Alleppey to Kollam route is a full-day journey through Kerala’s most extensive backwater system and is a memorable experience for those with time. These are public ferries rather than tourist houseboats, which means they are slower, simpler and considerably cheaper. The experience of travelling alongside local people through the backwaters is very different from a private houseboat and well worth considering if it fits your itinerary.
Self-drive cars are available in Kerala from operators including Indus Go, EVM Wheels and Tranzcars. However self-drive in Kerala is genuinely challenging for most international visitors and we would be honest about this.
Kerala’s roads, particularly in the Western Ghats, involve narrow mountain roads, unpredictable local traffic and driving conventions that take considerable experience to navigate safely. Traffic in Kochi and other cities is dense and fast-moving. The risk of a minor accident is real and damage costs for a rental vehicle can be significant and complicated to manage as a foreign visitor. Self-drive is also more expensive than hiring a cab with a driver once you factor in the vehicle cost, insurance, fuel and the mental load of navigating an unfamiliar road system.
Our honest recommendation is to hire a driver rather than self-drive. The cost difference is smaller than most guests expect and the experience of travelling with a knowledgeable local driver adds rather than subtracts from a Kerala journey.
