The Kochi Muziris Muziris Biennale is open from 12th of December 2018 and will extend until the 29th of March 2019. The Biennale is spread across multiple venues in and around Fort Kochi, Mattancherry and at the Durbar Hall in Ernakulam city. This year the Biennale is based on the theme - Possibilities for a "Non-Alienated" life.
The fourth edition of the Biennale had its own share of troubles and issues in the aftermath of the Kerala floods of 2018. Moments of uncertainty were overcome with the will of people and artists from around the world. Even though non of the venues were affected directly as part of the floods, it was, in general, a moment of havoc for the state of Kerala, months before the beginning of the Biennale 2018.
Anita Dube was decided to be the curator for the Kochi Biennale 2018. The end of a particular biennale will declare the curator for the upcoming Biennale. Ms. Dube had a series of extensive travel to some 32 different countries to select the artwork for the Kochi Biennale 2018. The Biennale art pavilion at the Cranberry Yard, the art room concept is all unique elements that make this year's Biennale different from the other.
The Biennale is not just about showcasing art; it aims are developing a culture of understanding and enjoying art. If visitors spend enough time exploring about the artist and the artwork, the world of Kochi Biennale could change the way we think equipping us with the perspective of the artist. Even though most visitors go blank seeing different artworks, there would have been impressive changes, at least for some, especially the way they see art. Probably the last thing you could do towards enjoying the Biennale is to spend the most amount of time a visitor has at disposal.
The art room project at the Cranberry yard is about engaging children as well as adults to indulge themselves in creating something. During our visit, we found some artists helping children to make something out of clay. Some have made some incredible artworks out of clay for the first time, and all of them are on display there. Another section was about making artifacts out of coconut leaves. Art, in general, is something hidden deep inside us and they come out in some form only if we allow it to come out. It is about allowing yourself to enhance your imagination to bring out the best out of you.
Dedicate a whole day at some venues to understand and enjoy the Biennale; there have been some outstanding works at the Biennale. The list works include installations, movies, photographs, artwork, artifacts, stories, and audiovisual installations. Almost all of them are based on the theme this year -"Possibilities for a "Non-Alienated" life"
