Kerala Snake Boat Races: The Real Experience vs. the Hype

There are two kinds of snake boats that you can find in Kerala, one is the ritual boat that you see in Aranmula Pamba river associated with the Aranmula Parthasarathy temple and the second one is like a sport often seen at the Nehru Trophy boat race race held annually in Alleppey on the second Saturday of August. This auspicious event radiates a distinct ambiance in Alleppey, where the townsfolk fervently discuss the race's stories, teams, and anticipations.

Traditionally, these elongated boats served as naval vessels for local principalities, allowing warriors to swiftly reach their destinations by rowing in unison. Their sleek and narrow design enables them to slice through the water like fish.

During the boat race, Alleppey transforms into a vibrant hub where conversations revolve solely around the event—from the participating teams to the anticipated happenings on race day. Each boat represents clubs from various backwater regions in and around Alleppey, reflecting the festival's deep connection to the backwaters.

While Kerala tourism and social media showcase breathtaking visuals of past boat races—stunning videos and photographs featuring around a hundred powerful men rowing vigorously in rhythm to the drumbeats—the actual experience often differs. The event can be hot and sultry, with spectators struggling to catch a glimpse through the crowd. It's crucial to note that the reality may not live up to the idealized portrayals seen online.

In recent years, the boat race dates have coincided with heavy rainfall, leading to challenges for organizers. The South West Monsoon, which used to end in late July a decade ago, now extends into August, potentially affecting the event's visual appeal and reducing the crowd's enthusiasm.

However, a month before the race, practice sessions offer an exceptional opportunity to witness these magnificent boats up close. These sessions take place daily from 7 to 10 in the morning and 4 to 6 in the evening. Hiring a houseboat or a shikara boat during these sessions provides the best vantage point and proximity to observe the snake boats. From a personal perspective, it's more enjoyable to watch the snake boat race on YouTube and then attend the practice sessions for a more immersive and engaging experience.

The people of Alleppey are passionate about the race, fervently supporting their club on their home ground. However, for outsiders, the excitement may wane after the first half-hour, particularly if the weather is rainy or sunny, as the tropical climate can make conditions uncomfortable. To ensure a memorable experience, visitors should inquire with their hotel or shikara/houseboat operators about the practice sessions, as they can provide access to these sessions.
