Cycling in Kerala and South India — Green Earth Trails

What this experience involves

  • Trek Marlin 5 and 6 Gen 3 mountain bikes with dedicated air-conditioned support van
  • Routes combining mountains, plantations, countryside, backwaters and coast
  • Fully customisable - part cycling, part leisure, built around your pace
  • Backup mechanic, basic spares and refreshments throughout
  • Option to transfer to the support van at any point - no pressure, no guilt
  • Extended South India routes from Bangalore or Tamil Nadu into Kerala

Cycling in Kerala is not a single landscape experience. On a well-designed program you can ride through tea plantation country in the Western Ghats in the morning and descend into coconut and rubber farmland by afternoon. The following day you are on quiet backwater roads with water on both sides. A few days later the route opens onto coastal roads along the Arabian Sea. No other cycling destination in South India offers this range of terrain, culture and scenery within a single program.

Green Earth Trails has been running cycling programs in Kerala and South India for years. We do not operate group departures for cycling. Every program is private, every route is built around the riders, and the pace is set by you rather than by a schedule.

The routes we ride

Kerala round trip – 8 to 10 days

This is our signature program and the one we recommend most confidently. It is less a pure cycling tour and more an adventure trail — a moving program that combines cycling with birding stops, short treks and hikes, downhill rides through forest roads, and cultural visits to villages and heritage sites along the route. The landscapes change every day. You begin in the highlands and end in Kochi, or begin in Kochi and loop back. The route takes in the tea estates of Munnar, the forest edges of Thekkady, the midland countryside of central Kerala, the backwater roads of Kuttanad and the coastal stretches of the Malabar shore. This is the program that stays with people.

Tamil Nadu to Kerala – crossing the Western Ghats

For riders who want more miles and more variety, the Tamil Nadu to Kerala route extends the journey significantly. You begin in the Tamil countryside, passing through temple towns and agricultural landscapes that feel entirely different from Kerala. The route crosses the Western Ghats through one of the mountain passes, a challenging climb with extraordinary views, and descends into Kerala’s spice country. This program suits riders who want a real sense of travelling across a landscape rather than cycling within one.

Bangalore to Kerala — the Karnataka corridor

Starting from Bangalore, the route moves through the Karnataka countryside — palace towns, coffee and spice plantations, forest roads and river valleys — before descending into Kerala. This is a long program suited to riders with two to three weeks and genuine endurance. The variety of landscape across three states over this distance is remarkable.

All our programs end in Kochi, which is the natural departure point for international guests flying home.

How the programs work

Difficulty and pace

Most of our routes are moderate leisure rides. The terrain varies from flat backwater roads to rolling plantation country to mountain climbs. Hard technical trails are available but are the minority rather than the norm. We do not operate battery-assisted cycles — all riding is on Trek Marlin mountain bikes, which means the difficulty is real.

The most important thing to understand about our approach is the backup van. It is there on every day of every cycling program, it carries your luggage, it carries your spare kit, and it is always within reach. If you want to skip a section, get in the van. If a climb is harder than expected, get in the van. If you simply want to sit and watch the countryside from a moving vehicle for an hour, get in the van. There is no expectation that you cycle every kilometre. The program is about the experience of moving through these landscapes, not about completing a distance target.

The support setup

Our dedicated cycling support van is purpose-built for the program. It has racks to carry the bikes inside, air-conditioned seating for riders who want to rest, a supply of water and refreshments, and a basic toolkit with a mechanic on longer programs. Trek Marlin 5 and 6 Gen 3 bikes are allocated to riders based on availability and fit.

Part cycling, part leisure

This is the aspect of our programs that genuinely differentiates us from other cycling operators. We do not insist that a cycling program is only cycling. If you want to spend a morning cycling and an afternoon on a houseboat, we build that in. If you want three days of cycling followed by two days at a plantation bungalow doing nothing, we build that in too. The cycling is the spine of the program but the flesh around it can be anything you want.

This flexibility means cycling programs with us suit a wider range of riders than most. You do not need to be a dedicated cyclist to join. You need to enjoy being outdoors, moving through landscapes at a pace that lets you actually see them, and being willing to push yourself on the days when the terrain asks for it.

The bikes

We use Trek Marlin 5 and 6 Gen 3 mountain bikes. These are well-maintained hardtail mountain bikes suited to the variety of surfaces on Kerala’s roads — tarmac, forest tracks, plantation paths and riverside roads. We do not offer electric-assisted cycles. All riding is on conventional geared bikes.

Helmets are provided. Riders should bring their own cycling shorts and shoes if they have preferences. For guests who do not have specific cycling kit, good quality sports clothing and trainers are sufficient for leisure-paced programs.

Best time for cycling in Kerala

October to March is the optimal window for cycling programs in Kerala. The weather is dry, temperatures are moderate — particularly in the highlands — and road conditions are at their best. The highland sections of the Western Ghats are cool in the mornings and warm in the afternoons, which is ideal for cycling.

For the longer South India programs covering Tamil Nadu and Karnataka, the same October to March window applies. Longer programs that extend into April may encounter early summer heat in the lowlands.

Duration and customisation

Our cycling programs range from a couple of days incorporated into a broader Kerala leisure program to two or three week dedicated South India cycling expeditions. The right duration depends entirely on your endurance, your available time and what you want from the experience.

If you are considering cycling for the first time in a hot climate, we suggest starting with a shorter program — three to five days of cycling within a longer ten-day Kerala trip. This gives you the experience without overcommitting to distances that may feel harder than expected in the tropical heat.

If you are an experienced cyclist looking for a proper long-distance South India program, we can build a two to three week route that will genuinely test you while keeping the flexibility and comfort that our support model provides.

Tell us where you are in your thinking and we will build the right program around it.

Questions and answers

Do I need to be a fit cyclist to join a Green Earth Trails cycling program?

No. Most of our programs are leisure to moderate pace and the support van is always within reach. If you want to skip a section, get in the van. The cycling is the spine of the program but the flexibility is real.

What kind of bikes do you provide?

Trek Marlin 5 and 6 Gen 3 mountain bikes. Hardtail bikes suited to the variety of surfaces on Kerala's roads. We do not offer electric-assisted cycles.

Can I combine cycling with other activities like a houseboat or wildlife stay?

Yes. We design private programs around what you want. A typical structure might be three days of cycling followed by a houseboat night and two days at a plantation bungalow. The cycling can be the spine of the program or just one element of a broader Kerala journey.

What is the best time of year for cycling in Kerala?

October to March is the optimal window. The weather is dry, temperatures are moderate especially in the highlands, and road conditions are at their best. Programs that extend into April may encounter early summer heat in the lowlands.

Can the cycling tours be extended into Tamil Nadu or Karnataka?

Yes. We run extended South India programs starting from Bangalore through Karnataka into Kerala, or from the Tamil countryside crossing the Western Ghats into Kerala. These suit riders with two to three weeks and genuine endurance.
