Praveg Atolls Lakshadweep – Thinnakara Island

Duration · 3 to 6 days Best season · October to May

A tented Cocoon cottage resort on a coral atoll in the Agatti lagoon, with reef and lagoon at your doorstep. Praveg Atolls offers full board accommodation, return transfers from Agatti, and access to some of the finest reef snorkelling in the Arabian Sea.

The Setting

Lakshadweep is a chain of thirty-six coral atolls in the Arabian Sea, two to four hundred kilometres off the Kerala coast. Only ten islands are inhabited and fewer still are open to tourism. Reef snorkelling and lagoon swimming here are widely considered the finest in the Indian Ocean, on par with the Maldives but with a fraction of the visitors and a stricter environmental regime.

Thinnakara is a small uninhabited island in the Agatti atoll, a short boat ride from the main island. The lagoon is shallow, calm and clear, with live coral in good health and visibility that often exceeds twenty metres. The island itself is a slim crescent of white sand and coconut palm, with no permanent settlement beyond the resort.

The Property

Praveg Atolls is a tented Cocoon cottage resort operated by Praveg Limited, a publicly listed Indian hospitality company. The resort sits on the lagoon-facing edge of Thinnakara and offers full board accommodation, return transfers from Agatti airport, and access to reef snorkelling and water sports.

The Cocoon cottages are semi-permanent structures with hard flooring, fixed bathrooms, climate control and the comforts of a hotel room, configured to suit the protected ecology of the islands.

Praveg Atolls is the most accessible Lakshadweep stay program available today. The natural setting is among the finest in the archipelago, with the same reef and lagoon quality as Bangaram or Agatti. The trade-off is footprint: Praveg is built for higher occupancy, while the older Bangaram Island Resort retains a smaller, quieter footprint at a higher price point. We are happy to advise on which property fits your priorities.

Accommodation

The Cocoon cottages come in two configurations:

Sea-facing Cocoons sit at the front of the property with direct lagoon views. Non-sea-facing Cocoons sit slightly inland among the coconut palms, with the lagoon a short walk away. Both share the same internal layout: queen or twin bed configuration, attached bathroom with hot and cold water, climate control and basic amenities.

The pricing on this page is for Non Sea View Cocoons. Sea View rates are available on request and are typically twenty to thirty percent higher.

Frequently asked questions

Is Praveg Atolls suitable for a quiet, private island holiday?

Praveg Atolls is the most accessible Lakshadweep stay program available today, but it is not the most private. The resort is built for higher occupancy than the older Bangaram Island Resort, with conference facilities and a growing room count. The natural setting is excellent and the lagoon is genuinely among the finest in the Indian Ocean. If maximum privacy and a small property footprint are your priorities, Bangaram Island Resort is the better fit. If excellent reef access at a more accessible price point is the priority, Praveg Atolls is well placed.

How do I get to Thinnakara Island?

All visitors fly into Agatti airport, the only commercial airstrip in Lakshadweep. Indigo and Air India Express operate seasonal flights from Kochi. From Agatti, the resort arranges a return boat transfer to Thinnakara, included in the package price. The boat transfer takes approximately thirty to forty-five minutes depending on sea conditions.

What is the cottage like inside?

The Cocoon cottages are semi-permanent tented structures with hard flooring, climate control, an attached bathroom with hot and cold water, and the basic furnishings of a hotel room. Both Sea View and Non Sea View cottages share the same internal layout. The structures are designed to balance comfort with the ecological constraints of building on a coral atoll, so they are not full masonry buildings but they are also not basic camping tents.

Is the snorkelling and reef life genuinely good?

Yes. The lagoon around Thinnakara has live coral in good health, visibility regularly above twenty metres, and a healthy reef fish population. The reef is comparable to the Maldives but with much lower diver pressure. Snorkelling gear is available on the island at additional cost, or you can bring your own.

Can I dive at Thinnakara?

PADI-certified scuba diving is available on the island at additional cost, organised through the resort's water sports desk. Both certified diving and discover-scuba sessions for beginners are offered. Diving is not included in the package price and is paid for separately on the island.

Do you handle the Lakshadweep permit?

Yes. Once your booking is confirmed, we collect the required documents from you (Aadhar for Indian guests, passport and visa for foreign guests, plus photographs and contact details) and submit them to the resort, who in turn submits them to the Lakshadweep administration. Permits are typically issued ten to fifteen days before travel. Permit charges are included in the package price.

Are the rates dynamic or fixed?

The rates on this page are contracted seasonal rates from Praveg Limited and are valid for stays from 15 October 2026 onwards. Blackout dates may apply during peak holiday periods such as Christmas, New Year and Indian school holidays, at the resort's discretion. We will confirm exact pricing at the time of your enquiry based on your travel dates.
