Where the Travancore royal family came to holiday, and where Kerala's Ayurveda programs are widely available
Highlights
Kovalam has been receiving travellers for well over a hundred years. Long before it became known internationally as a beach destination, the Travancore royal family built their summer retreat on the rocky hillock above the shore. That building, the Halcyon Castle, constructed in 1932, now sits at the heart of the Leela Kovalam and continues to function as the official guesthouse of the Government of Kerala for state visits. The history is built into the clifftop.
Most visitors today come to Kovalam as part of a longer Kerala circuit, spending two or three nights at the southern end of their journey before flying home from Thiruvananthapuram. That is a sensible way to use it. The beach is attractive, the setting is comfortable, and the proximity to the airport makes it a practical final stop.
But the more interesting reason to spend time in Kovalam is one that most itineraries overlook.
Kovalam and the stretch of coastline running south towards Chowara hold the highest concentration of Ayurveda treatment properties in Kerala. This is not a recent development – the combination of a calm coastal climate, proximity to Thiruvananthapuram’s medical infrastructure, and decades of specialist practitioners has made this region the natural home of serious Ayurveda programs.
The properties range from simple treatment centres to dedicated wellness resorts, and they operate across a wide range of budgets. Treatment programs typically run for 7, 14 or 28 days. The 14-day program is the minimum duration that Ayurveda practitioners generally consider meaningful for therapeutic benefit, rather than a surface-level experience.
For guests combining a Kerala circuit tour with an Ayurveda program, the natural structure is straightforward: travel Kerala first with us, then settle into Kovalam for your treatment program. The two work well together. Exploring the hills, backwaters and wildlife while you are mobile, then resting and treating at the coast, is a logical sequence that many of our guests find appealing.
We do not manage Ayurveda programs directly, but we can recommend properties suited to your budget and treatment goals and structure the travel portion of your trip around your arrival date in Kovalam.
Kovalam’s main beach – Lighthouse Beach, is the most visited, anchored at its southern end by the red and white striped lighthouse that gives it its name. It is an attractive beach, though it draws a mixed crowd and can feel busy during peak season. Hawah Beach, immediately north, is calmer.
The accommodation picture in Kovalam proper is more limited than most visitors expect. The significant inventory is not on the main beach but in Chowara, a few kilometres south, which for practical purposes is part of the same destination. The majority of the larger, better-quality resorts are in this stretch.
Bond Safari operates certified water sports programs from Kovalam, including PADI scuba diving, parasailing and other activities. For guests who want an active beach day, this is a reliable option with professional certification standards.
Kovalam is the natural base for a full-day excursion to Kanyakumari, roughly 100 kilometres south. Most guests leave after breakfast and are back by early evening. The route typically covers Poovar backwater mangrove forests, Padmanabhapuram Palace, the Vivekananda Rock Memorial and the Thiruvalluvar Statue. It is a long but rewarding day, covering three distinct experiences: the backwaters, a 16th-century palace, and the southernmost tip of the Indian subcontinent where three bodies of water meet.
October to March is the right window. The southwest monsoon that runs June to September affects Kovalam more directly than the hill stations further north, and the sea can be rough for swimming and water sports during that period. October onwards brings calmer waters, comfortable temperatures and the best conditions for both the beach and any Ayurveda program.
