Thekkady sits in the spice-scented highlands of Kerala's Cardamom Hills, and at its heart is the Periyar National Park — one of the most significant wildlife reserves in South India. The centrepiece of the park is Periyar Lake, a reservoir formed by the Mullaperiyar Dam across the Periyar River, deep inside the forest. The lake is the reason most visitors come to Thekkady, and the boat safari on it is the one experience that is entirely unique to this destination.
At Green Earth Trails, we include the Thekkady boat ride in all our Kerala tour packages that feature Thekkady. The reason is simple: every other activity in Thekkady — spice garden walks, elephant encounters, trekking — can be found or approximated elsewhere in Kerala. The boat safari on Periyar Lake cannot. It is Thekkady's defining experience, and seats are limited. We book tickets in advance to make sure you are not left at the shore.
The Periyar Lake boat safari: what to expect
The cruise lasts approximately one and a half hours and takes you through the still waters of the reservoir, with the forest rising on both banks. Wildlife comes to the water's edge to drink, graze and simply move through their habitat. You are watching from the lake, quietly, at a respectful distance — which is exactly how a wildlife encounter should be.
Common sightings include elephants, Indian gaur (bison), sambar deer, otters and a wide variety of waterbirds. Occasionally guests spot crocodiles along the banks. Tiger sightings have been reported across the lake, but these are genuinely rare — treat it as a remarkable bonus if it happens, not an expectation.
Sightings are never guaranteed. Wildlife behaves on its own terms, not on a schedule. What we can tell you from experience is that the early morning and late afternoon departures tend to offer the most activity, particularly during summer when animals gather at the water to drink. During the monsoon months (June to September), sightings are considerably less frequent.
Each boat carries around 70 passengers. Three boats operate simultaneously for each time slot. Life jackets are provided and must be worn throughout — a safety requirement introduced following a tragic incident at the park in 2009. All guests are expected to comply without exception.
No private vehicles are permitted inside the park. You will park at the main parking area in Thekkady and board a shuttle bus to the boat landing point. The shuttle ride takes around 15 minutes and costs ₹60 per person. Plan to arrive at the parking area at least 30 minutes before your boat departure time.
Binoculars are available for rent at the boat landing point counter. We recommend bringing your own if you have them — the difference in a wildlife sighting is significant.

Afternoon - 13:45 to 15:15 hours

Private boat safari at Periyar Lake
The Kerala Forest Department also operates a private boat safari with 18 seats, a dedicated naturalist guide, and tea and coffee served on board. The experience is considerably more focused than the shared boats — the guide can help you identify species, read animal behaviour and understand the forest ecology as you cruise.
Private boat safaris are subject to availability and are allocated at the discretion of the forest department. Timings follow the same schedule as the shared boats. Green Earth Trails can arrange this for guests who wish for a quieter, more guided experience on the lake.
How to book Thekkady boat ride tickets online
Tickets can be booked through two official channels:
Kerala Forest Department (recommended)
This is the direct booking portal for the Periyar Tiger Reserve. The booking process is straightforward, confirmations are clear and the ticket prices are the same as at the counter. This is the option we use for our guests.
Kerala Tourism Development Corporation (KTDC):
An alternative official portal. Also reliable, though the forest department site tends to be simpler to navigate.
Have a valid photo ID ready when booking — Aadhaar, passport or driving licence. The name and ID number you enter must match exactly with the document you bring to the boat landing point, as ID checks take place before boarding. Discrepancies will result in denied boarding without refund.
Important: park closures due to weather
Periyar National Park operates within a living forest ecosystem. When weather conditions become unfavourable — particularly during periods of heavy rainfall, cyclone warnings or other safety risks — the park authorities close the reserve and suspend all activities, including pre-booked boat safaris. This is done entirely in the interest of guest safety and wildlife protection, and closures can happen with little advance notice.
Being an agencies working closely with the park, Green Earth Trails monitors conditions closely when guests are in Thekkady. In the event of a park closure on your boating day, we will arrange an alternative experience — a green walk, bamboo rafting, a spice plantation tour or a guided nature walk in the surrounding area — so that your time in Thekkady remains worthwhile. Refunds for cancelled boat tickets due to park closure are subject to the forest department's own policy at the time.
This is one reason we encourage guests not to plan their entire Thekkady day around the boat safari alone. The surrounding landscape has much to offer regardless of park access.
Thekkady boating: practical tips
- Book tickets as early as possible, particularly during peak season (November to February). Popular slots sell out quickly.
- Carry your photo ID to the boat landing point — it will be randomly checked before boarding.
- Wear light, neutral-coloured clothing. Avoid bright colours or strong fragrances.
- Bring binoculars if you have them (desirable).
- Keep noise to a minimum during the cruise.
- The lake can feel cool in the early morning even during summer. A light layer is useful for the first slot.
- Arrive 30 minutes before your departure time at the parking area, not the boat landing point.
Plan your Thekkady visit with Green Earth Trails
Thekkady is a key part of most Kerala itineraries we design. Our Kerala tour packages include the Periyar Lake boat safari as a standard component, with tickets pre-booked in advance. We also include a guided spice garden tour, wildlife spotting in the forest buffer zone, and accommodation at carefully chosen properties in the Thekkady area.
If you would like to plan a Kerala journey that includes Thekkady, we would be glad to build an itinerary around your dates and interests.
